Every day, women take on responsibility for their families, children, and loved ones.

Because of the war, they make difficult decisions, live through the aftermath of loss and forced displacement, support others, and keep moving forward even in the hardest moments. But strength does not mean a woman should go without support. Those who serve as a pillar for others every day also deserve care, recovery, and a space where someone looks after them.

That is exactly what Voice of Romni’s summer camp for mothers and children became. A few days together — to rest, to be among people who understand, to recover their strength, and to feel the support that women themselves need too.

Inna Lytvyn relocated to Zakarpattia with her children from Zaporizhzhia region. A year ago, a russian strike took the lives of her eldest son and her husband. Since then, she has devoted herself almost entirely to her children, with little room left to think about her own recovery:

“When they called, I understood this was a chance I couldn’t afford to miss,” she shares. “My impressions are nothing but the best, the brightest. It’s a wonderful opportunity to restore my peace of mind, find balance, and go through a transformation so I can keep living.”

Another camp participant, Daria Kushnir, was also left on her own with two sons, aged six and eight. They were forced to leave their home and seek safety in Uzhhorod.

“These days made me look at myself differently. I realized that I, too, have a right to my feelings, to take care of myself, and not to forget my own worth. My children loved it here. They don’t even want to leave,” Daria says.

Each participant of our camp returned home with the same vital realization: taking care of yourself matters. When war, loss, displacement, and countless daily struggles and hardships surround you, asking for help and support is nothing to be ashamed of. It takes real strength to allow yourself to share the pain you’ve lived through, to open up, and to be vulnerable in front of others. And at the same time, to give yourself the chance to recover, to feel supported, and to find the strength to move forward.

The project “Comprehensive Support and Psychosocial Rehabilitation for Vulnerable Families in Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Sumy Regions” is implemented by the NGO Association of Roma Women Voice of Romni with the support of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Ukraine.
