“The Most Valuable Thing for Me Here Is the Silence”: Stories of Women from the Voice of Romni Summer Camp
Day by day, summer is drawing to a close. We spent it together with incredible women and their children, who have been recovering with us since June.
On August 22, the ninth session will come to an end, and with it, the Voice of Romni Summer Camp 2026. Over this time, we heard dozens of stories from women who came to us from different cities, each carrying her own experience and worries. Every one of them needed time to recover. And we did everything we could to make sure they found what they came for.
Hanna Morozova visited our camp with her two sons. A year and a half ago, her husband was killed defending Ukraine. She shares that the most valuable thing for her here is the silence.
“At home I kept waking up all the time, but here I closed my eyes in the evening and opened them in the morning — and I was in a wonderful mood. The forest, the birds singing — it’s just incredible. I wake up around half past five, have a cup of coffee, open the window — the birds are singing. It’s amazing. We don’t get to see the sea here, so for the kids the real joy is the pool and the spa — they don’t want to get out,” says Hanna.

Sometimes very little is needed to recover. And yet even the most basic things — quiet, calm, and a sense of relative safety — have remained out of reach for millions of Ukrainian women and men for more than four years now.
Mariia Holinska came to our camp with her son. Their home remains in Bilopillia, in the Sumy region, close to the front line. For safety, she was forced to relocate and now lives in Uzhhorod.
“We’ve felt the war, let’s say, in full. We’re truly grateful to your team for this opportunity — to spend these five days in such an atmosphere: warm, professional. We recovered physically, emotionally, and psychologically — your team’s support has meant so much to us. We’re leaving here full of energy, ready to keep living, to keep moving forward.”

It’s for moments like these that we create these camps — so that women have a space where they can stop, catch their breath, and feel that someone cares for them, so they can restore their strength and emotional resources. So that children can play, run, swim, make friends, laugh, and discover something new — and simply live a few days free of constant worry, with room for lightness, connection, and joy, which are so often missing during war.
We listened to their stories and watched how, in just a few days, their moods shifted, their strength returned, and a spark reappeared in their eyes — one that brings back a will to live. All of these meetings and conversations will stay with us. Thank you to every family who trusted us with their story.
The project “Comprehensive Support and Psychosocial Rehabilitation for Vulnerable Families in the Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Sumy Regions” is implemented with support from International Rescue Committee in Ukraine.
