Leadership in Action: Roma Women Gather to Address Crisis and Find Solutions
In times of war, women often become the primary caregivers, supporting their communities, yet they rarely have a voice in decision-making.
Our team is committed to changing this narrative by actively developing and supporting Roma women’s leadership.
It is crucial to involve Roma women in networks of mutual support, nurture their leadership potential, and ensure their participation in decision-making processes. We aim to create a space where women not only support one another but also grow as leaders, actively engage in creating change, and become an integral part of the nationwide women’s movement.
Recently, we brought together Roma women leaders and activists from Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Kryvyi Rih for an off-site session as part of our joint projects with CARE Ukraine. This meeting was part of the Women Lead in Emergencies program, aimed at strengthening the role of women in emergency situations.

Together with facilitators from Voice of Romni, the activists delved into what leadership means in challenging times. The session included both theoretical modules and practical exercises. They explored how women can strengthen their role in decision-making, act effectively in crisis conditions, and support others. Key topics included safety, economic stability, psychological resilience, and how to launch their own initiatives in uncertain times.
The event was filled with an atmosphere of understanding and support. Being in a circle of women who are on a similar path, listening to one another, and sharing experiences is an incredibly powerful feeling. We could see their confidence growing, because when you realize you are not alone, you find the strength to keep going.
We are sincerely grateful to every leader for her active participation and openness. And to our partners at CARE Ukraine – thank you for your trust and your support of Roma women.
