Anzhelika Bielova participated as an expert in an educational series on the “Diia. Education” platform
The course “Gender Equality and Social Inclusion in Communications” consists of 12 episodes, each explaining how to communicate with a focus on equality and inclusion.
This is a great opportunity to share expertise and experience on the inclusion of ethnic minorities and Indigenous peoples of Ukraine.
In the 10th episode, Anzhelika Bielova and human rights advocate and co-founder of Crimea SOS Alim Aliev discuss the visibility of ethnic communities in the public space, the challenges they face, and the role of the state in supporting Ukraine’s cultural diversity.
Today, equality and inclusion are not just values but essential standards in communication. Representatives of national minorities and Indigenous peoples are increasingly visible in media, advertising, and public awareness campaigns. However, it is crucial to avoid generalizations and steer clear of words with negative connotations when referring to entire communities.
“In government communications or socially significant content, it is important to emphasize that the actions of an individual should not lead society to judge an entire vulnerable group,” notes Anzhelika Bielova.
Additionally, using respectful terminology is key — for instance, saying “Roma” and “Roma community” instead of the commonly misused term “gypsies.”
It is essential to include representatives of national communities and Indigenous peoples in post-war reconstruction to ensure an inclusive recovery.
“Supporting the cultures of ethnic communities must be a key part of national unity.”
We are confident that such state-led educational initiatives contribute to building a society that understands inclusive communication is not just about using the right words—it’s about shifting societal narratives, debunking myths and misinformation, and creating equal opportunities for all.
“Many people emphasize the need for local government officials who understand ethnopolitics, the history of Indigenous peoples, and national minority issues in Ukraine. It is crucial for us to use this educational series to highlight key historical aspects and the correct terminology when state officials speak about the Roma national minority in Ukraine,” says Anzhelika Bielova.
We are grateful to Diia. Education for providing a platform to share important information and promote inclusive approaches. This is yet another step toward a Ukraine where every voice matters.
