A Women’s Initiative Group in Merefa Opened a Children’s Space at a Local Church
We are proud of what the participants of our women leaders’ course are doing.
It is truly inspiring to see Roma women bringing people together around important causes and initiating much-needed change in their communities.
Recently, in Merefa, Kharkiv region, the women’s group opened a children’s space at a local church. It is a place where Roma children can spend time in a safe and comfortable environment, learn, grow, connect with others, and simply feel cared for.

This space is the result of joint efforts: the materials needed to set it up were purchased within the project we are implementing together with CARE Ukraine, while all renovation work was carried out by the local community. This is a clear example that these changes matter to people and that they are ready to be part of the process.

During the opening of the space, our women leaders brought women together to discuss responsible parenting and emotional literacy within the family. At first, the participants were reserved and quiet, but later they realized how close this topic was to them and began to speak openly. The women shared their experiences, personal stories, concerns, and doubts. They also spoke about challenges familiar to many families. Their stories echoed one another, and through this, they felt mutual support. Practical exercises helped them analyze real-life situations, better understand their own emotions and the emotions of their children, and improve relationships within their families.
This event is yet another confirmation that change begins with people. Success becomes possible when there is an understanding of its necessity and a desire to move toward something better. The changes that the Roma community is creating together with local women leaders are laying the foundation for well-being and development.
